Ten Pieces of Inspiration #81

Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.

I spent some time this week working on a presentation designed to encourage people to volunteer their time to causes that they care about. For the slides, I simply used quotes from people that reinforced the idea that helping others is a powerful thing to do.

I found so many great quotes along these lines this week that when I started adding them to this “Pieces of Inspiration,” they just took over.

1. Anne Frank on today
You can make a change today. You can do something good in the next hour – or even the next minute if you try.

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” – Anne Frank

All you have to do is make the choice to do something and you can start immediately, even if it’s just figuring out the next step.

2. William James on how you act
Every single interaction you have with anyone else makes a difference in their life. In large part, it’s up to you how positive or negative that interaction is.

“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” – William James

In fact, even the lack of interaction – when you choose to do nothing – makes a difference, albeit a negative one.

3. Elizabeth Ann Seton on living simply
When you choose to sacrifice a bit of what you have, you can direct that sacrifice to help someone else.

“Live simply that others might simply live.” – Elizabeth Ann Seton

A sacrifice of time. A sacrifice of money. A sacrifice of energy. A sacrifice of talent.

4. Raghava KK on creating a 200 year plan for yourself
Many of us have a five year plan. Raghava proposes a 200 year plan.

In other words, what are you doing that will last beyond your years?

5. Sydney Smith on small actions
Even the simplest action makes a big difference.

“It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little – do what you can.” – Sydney Smith

Help someone in a moment of need. Listen to someone when they need to vent and don’t throw your two cents in. Drop a quarter in the bag of a street musician. It’s the little things.

6. Usman Riaz meets his hero
Excellent music, someone gets to meet his hero.

The music just blows me away, though, especially starting at 13:30.

7. Disraeli on riches
A compliment can make an enormous difference in a person’s life.

“The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own.” – Benjamin Disraeli

Don’t be afraid to tell people what they’re doing right.

8. Prayer festival in Tibet
People all over the world find guidance in prayer and meditation.

Whenever I see a picture like this, it makes me realize that people in completely different situations really aren’t all that different than people here. I’d rather see the similarities than the differences. Thanks to Gebchak Gompa for the image.

9. Daniel Berrigan on the feeling of giving
It feels tremendously good to give.

“Sometime in your life, hope that you might see one starved man, the look on his face when the bread finally arrives. Hope that you might have baked it or bought or even kneaded it yourself. For that look on his face, for your meeting his eyes across a piece of bread, you might be willing to lose a lot, or suffer a lot, or die a little, even.” – Daniel Berrigan

10. Walking across a bridge
Almost every journey we take in life is only accomplished because we walked across a bridge made by many hands.
